Finding out your child may have autism can bring up a lot of questions, and let’s be honest—worries too. But here’s the truth: you’re not supposed to figure everything out alone. That’s why one of the best steps you can take is building a team around your child—and around you.
Let’s walk through what that team might look like.
Who’s Who on Your Child’s Support Team
1. BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst)
Think of them as your child’s behavior coach and your go-to guide for ABA therapy. They design your child’s learning goals, train the rest of the team, and check in regularly to make sure things are working.
2. RBT (Registered Behavior Technician)
They’re the “hands-on” helper. RBTs work directly with your child, usually at home or in school, using strategies designed by the BCBA. They play games, teach skills, and help reduce challenging behaviors—all while taking data.
3. You.
That’s right—you’re the most important part of the team. You know your child best, and your voice matters. Great teams always include parents as active partners.
How to Choose the Right Team
- Trust your gut. If someone doesn’t feel like a good fit, it’s okay to explore other options.
- Ask questions. What’s their experience with autism? How do they communicate progress? Can you observe a session?
- Look for collaboration. The best providers explain things clearly, welcome your input, and care about your child’s well-being—not just checkboxes.
It’s Okay to Take Your Time
You don’t need every answer today. But little by little, with the right people by your side, it gets easier. And before you know it, your child will be learning and growing in ways you never imagined.
You’re not alone. We’re here to help.
